According to prospective cohort research, moderate coffee drinking, with or without sugar, is linked to a lower risk of death.

In the United Kingdom, approximately half a million people were registered to complete a variety of questionnaires, interviews, physical measurements, and medical examinations. 171,616 people out of this group completed at least one dietary questionnaire and met the studys eligibility requirements. 55.4 % of participants consumed coffee without sugar, 14.3 % with sugar, 6.1% with artificial sweetener, and 24.2% did not drink coffee at all. Coffee consumers were further grouped depending on the number of cups of coffee consumed regularly.

It was discovered that people who drank two to four cups of coffee each day, with or without sugar, had a reduced mortality risk than those who did not, independent of the coffee variety.

However, the researchers are of the view that the group consuming coffee with artificial sweeteners might be at greater health risks including obesity and hypertension and that further long-term research is needed. The findings were published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. (Medscape, May 31, 2022)
